Our Mission:

Description:

The Tri-Community Coalition is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization formed to prevent the abuse of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs through education, community action and involvement, and the promotion of a drug-free life-style.  The Tri-Community Coalition is made up of volunteers representing organizations in Berkley, Huntington Woods and Oak Park, including businesses, government, churches, school districts, law enforcement, medical, homeowners and public and private agencies.  The coalition works together to reduce substance abuse in their local neighborhoods.  We educate parents, students and other community members on the impact and prevention of substance abuse.  We also develop youth activities to encourage positive drug-free behaviors.

History:

The coalition grew out of a five-part recommendation of a 44-member task force in the
Berkley School District Board of Education in December, 1995.  One of the five parts
addressed the fact that "community involvement" is a critical component in any prevention proposal that a school district would adopt.  To that end, the Berkley School District and
a local church convened a meeting of approximately 80 key community leaders from across
the three cities, and the "coalition" concept was adopted in spring of 1996.
