The GREAT AMERICAN SMOKEOUT Hurrah for those who have taken a leadership position on a health related issue in our community!! Kudos to those who have stepped away from pack and have taken a position at the front of the line as a small group of leaders! Let's give a big cheer for those bars and night clubs going smoke-free! The Magic Bag, the Comedy Castle, the Royal Oak Music Theatre , Bosco's and Amici's Living Room are those who come to mind as a group of brave business folks who have stood up and have taken the Smoke Free Michigan message into their own hands. In this Michigan economic environment where revenue and the bottom line are crucial to the existence of a business these savvy business men and women---Mark Ridley (Comedy Castle); Jeremy Haberman (Magic Bag and Bosco's) as well as Maureen McNamara and Jennifer Stark (Amici's Pizza and Living Room) have actually snubbed their noses at the talking heads that say it will ruin any bar or night club business by going smoke free. THIS IS SIMPLY NOT THE CASE! These places are thriving and actually attracting all of the people that want to reduce their cleaning and laundry bills. These businesses are actually attracting those who want to keep their hair clean from the nasty stagnant smell of smoke. But, most importantly these businesses are attracting those who want to save their lungs from the second hand deadly smoke that swirls around all of Michigan's smoking bars and nightclubs. The GREAT AMERICAN SMOKEOUT will take place on Thursday, November 19 and the Tri-Community Coalition of Berkley, Huntington Woods and Oak Park encourages all bars, restaurants and night clubs in our community to participate by going SMOKE FREE at least for just this one day-if not longer. The proprietors may find that they actually like the smell of clean indoor air. They may find that they like the fact that more non smokers than smokers will be coming to eat and socialize in their establishments. They may find that they like the fact that they feel good about protecting their lungs and those of their workers and they may like the fact that they are no longer a follower, but have now stepped up to the front of the line where the really awesome leaders are.
